Young People

Local housing authorities need to work in partnership to prevent youth homelessness.

Different legislation and considerations apply to different groups of young people and we offer 3 different types of day:  homelessness and 16/17 year olds; planning ahead to prevent care leavers becoming homeless; homelessness prevention amongst 18 – 25 year olds.

your local requirements but includes:

Planning ahead to prevent care leavers becoming homeless

This day is premised on joint working to plan effectively with and for care leavers so homelessness is not part of their experience.  It is bespoke to local requirements, but can cover the following:

•    The legal duties to care leavers regarding accommodation Parts 6 & 7 of the

Housing Act 1996 and the Children Act 1989

•    The Local Offer  - shaping housing options and pathways for care leavers

•    Practical working arrangements to ensure early planning and support for care leavers

•    Joint protocols between Children’s Services and Housing Authorities

•    Commissioning for positive outcomes - including what works well to support young people

leaving care with complex and multiple needs

Homelessness prevention amongst single 18 – 25 year olds

A significant amount of single young people approach Councils as homeless or threatened with

homelessness every year. For too many young people there is a pattern of repeat homelessness, spells of rough sleeping and exploitation. How can Housing Options Services increase prevention rates of homelessness and assist young people with realistic options in the current climate?

This day focusses on:

•    Working with parents and families

•    Incentivising planned moves - housing options that can support employment and education

•    Supporting young people with complex needs

•    Vulnerability assessments
